How Much Does A Toilet Weigh

If you are thinking about removing or replacing a toilet, you might need some help and you might be wondering about the weight of a toilet. The weight of a toilet varies, depending if it’s a 1 piece or 2 piece toilet. It also depends if there is water in it.

Toilets often last 20-30 years, which means they are dense and durable. They also have to support the weight of people large and small.

Both 1 piece and 2 piece toilets will weigh anywhere from 70-120 lbs.  Once the valves, seat, and water are added to the toilet, they can add another 20 lbs to the overall weight (primarily water).

In the sections below, I’ll share how much a standard toilet weighs and I’ll break down typical weights you’ll see in 1 piece and 2 piece toilets. In case you’re planning an adventure, we’ll even learn how much a portable toilet weighs.

The weight of a toilet seat is minimal but should also be considered.  It is usually not included in the weight of a toilet.

Material Is A Factor In Toilet’s Weight

Almost all toilets are made from porcelain. Porcelain is created from clay and the main type of clay used to make porcelain is kaolin. There is also a significant about of quartz in porcelain that helps make it translucent.

Because it’s a natural substance, mined from the soil, it is tough and long-lasting. Clay is dense and it’s what gives your toilet its weight.

Weight Of A 1 Piece Toilet

1 piece toilets are more challenging to pick up and move than their 2 piece counterparts. They have a similar weight as 2 piece toilets but they can’t be separated. I searched for a few examples of 3 popular brands:

  • American Standard Boulevard Flowise – 117 lbs
  • Kohler San Souci – 94 lbs
  • Toto Ultra Max II – 99 lbs

Weight Of A 2 Piece Toilet

A 2 piece toilet is the most common type of toilet. If you have a toilet in your house it’s most likely a 2 piece.

The 2 pieces consist of the tank and the bowl. The tank is bolted onto the bowl after it has been set.

2 piece toilets can weight anywhere from 70 lbs to just over 100 lbs. I did some research and found three common brands of 2 piece toilets have different weights.

  • American Standard H2O – 70 lbs
  • Kohler Wellworth – 86 lbs
  • Toto Vispin II – 106 lbs

All of these toilets are great quality, but it’s reasonable to believe the Toto toilet is thicker and more durable. You can expect the tank and bowl to weight about 50% of the toilet.

If you’re removing a toilet or installing one, the 2 pieces will make it a lot easier to move.

Weight Of A Portable Toilet

Portable toilets aren’t made from porcelain. Instead, they are made from plastic so they are very lightweight.   Most portable toilets are 10-15 lbs, which is great for taking it on the road.

Conclusion

When thinking about the weight of a toilet it’s important to consider what it’s made from. Traditional toilets are made from porcelain.

Porcelain is made from natural clay that is dense and durable. It’s not surprising to know that a toilet will last for decades.

Porcelain toilets come in different shapes and sizes and their weight depends on the model. Some toilet models are 1 piece toilets, while others are 2 pieces.

2 piece toilets are much more common in American households. 1 piece toilets are more modern looking and could be considered designer toilets.

2 piece toilets will be easier to move and install because the weight of the toilet is split in half. You should expect your toilet to weight between 70-120 lbs.

The weight given is without water. Once water is added, another 20 lbs can be added to the overall weight.
