Planning a trip to Belize and curious about the toilets? Toilets are an important aspect of the equation for travelers and businessmen alike.
Most people prefer to use the porcelain throne at home, but when you’re on the go, sometimes you’ve got to go.
You’ll be pleased to know that toilets in Belize are similar to Western-style toilets. In most cases, you won’t get the elongated bowl options or comfort height toilets that are often found in the USA. Expect to find standard size (round) toilets at hotels, airports, and restaurants but you won’t find public restrooms very often (parks for example).
Plan accordingly if you are going to be sightseeing during the day as you might not have access to a toilet. The great thing about Belize is the ocean so in an emergency, you can always go for a “swim”.
I found that toilet seats in Belize aren’t super sturdy and they can break because they are relatively thin compared to higher-quality seats (this was at one of the nicer hotels in Belize City).
Also, understand that the water pressure isn’t always strong. If you encounter low water pressure, it’s wise to discard used toilet paper into the trashcan located near the toilet rather than flush it down the toilet. If you are surprised at the thought of not flushing toilet paper, know that the standard practice in many countries is to not flush used toilet paper.
Below are two photos of my stay at a hotel in Belize City. Don’t expect bidets, or anything fancy, but the toilet will be sufficient!
Conclusion
If you’re headed to Belize, be prepared to enjoy the historical sites and the beach. Whether it’s an adventure retreat in the mountains or a scuba session in the clear blue ocean, Belize has so much to offer.
The toilets will be sufficient even for the pickiest individuals. Don’t expect the water pressure to be super strong, but you can expect a Western-style toilet. Safe travels!
